By the mid-'60s the Biggest Little City had started to take on a new look so a new arch was in place. The Mapes hotel was no longer the tallest structure, that title going to the new First National Bank building at First and Virginia Street. Live entertainment was now featured in almost every venue. Downtown was still the hub of commercial activity before the malls were built.


Under the watchful eye of Reno Police department's infamous motorcycle duo the cruisers slow for the tracks.


In the '60s cruising was a popular weekend pastime. Through town and out 4th street to the FrostTop and Cow Palace drive-in restaurants and back was a typical cruise route.


Sam Harper"s white, fuel injected '57, with it's pronounced intake whistle, was still the king of performance. But the red 427 Galaxie predicted the wave of muscle cars to come. The exchanges of greetings downtown could lead to clandestine late night speed contests. And bragging rights.
