The Reno Arch was the icon

of the “divorce capital” in the 1950's. Originally erected in 1927 and modified to this form in 1934 it stood until 1963. It became the symbol of Reno's main street. “Cruising main” always involved slowing down for the tracks and that is our vantage point.


In 1957, Reno was still a rough western town where shady characters and streetwalkers were part of a colorful population and you would always see working cowboys downtown.


Our street scene includes the new performance car - a yellow '55 rolling past the previous performance leader, a '50 Olds 88. Woodies were commonly used by “dude ranches” to transport the divorcees during their six week residency stay. The red '29 roadster was a state-of-the-art hot rod and a Reno mainstay through several owners.
